Dealing with generation z procrastination
So, chances are you clicked on this article because you either already are an active reader or because you think I’ll be able to give you a magical spell to get over procrastination, when in reality I’ll probably not but if I help you understand the problem at its core then you’ll be able to find a solution.
The truth is most of the tasks that we finish in sleepless nights close to the due date are noticeably different from well written papers. Procrastination has been an ongoing topic and a problem among Generation Z, people who currently are along the range of 13 to 20 years old. It has been proven that procrastination is getting worse and technology is partly to blame because there are so many ways to kill time. Either by watching online videos or getting involved in social media, technology has affected pretty much everything we do and it’s easy to get information and entertainment on-demand.
Overall, everyone deals with procrastination, some better than others. It's unstoppable since the world will always provide you with distractions or stuff that should be “prioritized.” A solution to this is to learn that time is limited. Therefore, we have to understand what are the levels of importance. In all honesty, sometimes I get more done when I procrastinate a bigger task and complete a smaller one; like if I have to clean my room, I will exchange it with responding to my emails instead so I feel like I at least did something productive. By following these tips, you might be able to procrastinate a little less:
#1- Recognize you are procrastinating, one of the first steps to change is to recognize what you are doing wrong. This will help you identify the problem entirely and seek for solutions.
#2- Figure out why you are procrastinating, it might be the need to watch that last episode of the show you love or the difficulty level of the task, that is making you delay it. Try not to avoid or postpone doing work, unless it is to do something urgent or essential.
#3- Forgive yourself, we’ve all procrastinated doing a particular chore or work assignment so don’t be too harsh on yourself, recognize the mistake and release the guilt of not taking the best decision at the moment. Regardless, that doesn't justify it, so don't do it often.
#4- Cut out distractions, if you need to get going make sure you get rid of all distractions, things that are taking you away from achieving the responsibility. Once you do this, it's going to be easier to deep focus.
#5- Make to-do lists or find time-management apps, organizing yourself and what you have to do is very helpful. Write down the assignments that need to be completed that day and separate a time to do each one. Remember to complete higher priority tasks first. Some apps of my liking are MyHomework, Trello or Grammarly , which is a good option to save time on fixing writing mistakes.
#6- Get to it. Don’t give yourself time to hesitate to do a task and just do it. You already know what needs to be done so find the motivation, develop the discipline and make yourself proud.
