My 10 powerful tips for creating new habits and actually sticking to them

“DEPENDING ON WHAT THEY ARE, OUR HABITS WILL EITHER MAKE US OR BREAK US. WE BECOME WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO.” ―SEAN COVEY

Becoming your best self will only exist in your mind until you make the decision of working to become that person. Habits are a great way to help you achieve that. By doing something so often, the action becomes deeply wired into our brain and results naturally.

Habits can be divided into subcategories, and some are harder to achieve than others. It’s not the same to start a routine of taking your makeup off at night than to stop smoking. Certain habits take more time to develop than others, but with the right consistency and dedication, you can accomplish them. Below you would find some of my tips to create new habits and potentially change your life.

Tip #1-  Be in action rather than in indecision

It is better to do something than nothing all. Habits can change your life, but you have to find the willpower to make that change. Instead of waiting for Monday to start working out, begin now and leave all the excuses behind. You know what you need to do to get working.

Tip #2- Have the intention.

It’s crucial to know why you want to start or create that new habit. If you list all of the reasons for making the change, then it will be easier to find the motivation needed to start hustling.

Tip #3-  Understand what convictions and principles are blocking your call to action.

If you haven’t started yet, then it would be good if you figure out what is stopping you from making the change. It might be an economic restriction or simply the lack of dedication. Whatever it is, try to find a suitable solution for the situation.

Tip #4- Overcome ego depletion

One of the main things that might hold you back is ego depletion, which essentially is one of the reasons you find yourself so burned out after a hard day. It affects our ability to form new habits because our willpower is distributed among many areas of our lives. To solve this,  it’s important to work on creating one habit at a time.

Tip #5-  Don’t wait for Monday
A big mistake we often do is to wait for Monday to start. How many times have you told yourself “I’ll do it tomorrow ? “ and then end up not doing it. If you’ve been trying to make a change don’t postpone it and just do it.

Tip #6- Live in the now

In this case, don’t think about what can happen in a year and instead focus on the 24 hours in front of you and work on developing the habits directed towards the path that gets you closer to where you want to be.

Tip #7- Less Daydreaming and more making it happen

Don’t fantasize about the ideal version of yourself and start working towards it, by operating a little harder you’ll notice that is was easier all along.

Tip #8- Tell People

I know that is sometimes better to work hard in silence and let success be your noise, but by allowing certain people around you know of your efforts on forming a new habit, you’ll be able to track your energy. Use different resources, talk to your friends about it, use apps like StickK or Habitshare to get reinforcement from others in the help of your new routine. We tend to look for social approval and knowing you’ll be held responsible gives you a push to be consistent.

Tip #9-  Remember that habits make us who we are

As James Clear mentioned in his book “atomic habits,” “Your life today is essentially the sum of your habits” What you repeatedly do, ultimately forms who you are.

Tip #10- Be patient

Understand that certain things take more time than others. To become truly great at something you have to dedicate tons of time and energy.
