The importance of romanticizing your life

Over the years, we've become obsessed with living a utopian or perfect life that's often portrayed in movies or tv shows. We are presented with beautiful montages or setups that make us want to live the life shown; shots that have been thought of, favorable dialog, everything perfectly made. Truth is, the only place that perfect reality exists, is within the film.

I get it, suddenly the extraordinary becomes ordinary, the thing that seemed unusual is now usual, and we rapidly adapt to a lifestyle, place, or thing that we first thought was new, sometimes making it no longer exciting. We feel powerless for not having that life; but if we overlook what we have in front of us, we'll never truly get the feeling that we are craving. Because we will be stuck with the next big thing or look past the things we've achieved.

Here are some things that could help you romanticize your life:

  1. Being grateful and constantly reminding ourselves to keep our feet on the ground. Not because there's something wrong with flying but because if we do so, it should be to a healthy limit.

  2. Making life more enjoyable by changing the lens. Make life more exciting than it is, by looking at the things you find beautiful and by knowing that it's not a place that you long for, but a feeling. That no city is going to make you feel that which you crave and that the desire to live a movie-like life is not given by anyone or anything.

  3. Working hard. Although being grateful is a big part of making life more wonderful, there's nothing wrong with being ambitious and wanting growth. Opportunities could come knocking at the door and working towards the life you want helps us see the world more beautifully.

  4. Perspective. Life is what we make it to be. Attitude plays a significant role in happiness, and though it's not easy, we should not waste time wishing for something better without taking action.

  5. Being realistic. We usually have unrealistic standards for ourselves, which can feel impossible. Every day is special, you just have to know where to look. Give purpose to every little thing you do.

  6. Look back. Remembering the things you've wished or prayed for, that are now a reality, makes us see how far we’ve come.

All of these suggestions might take a while to digest, but if they apply, try to exercise them little by little. Don't rush it and remember whatever feelings you might have, they're ok. Talk it out with someone or simply write them down for reflection.
