6 ways to properly distribute your time for better results

Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days. – Zig Ziglar

An often misconception is that we don't have enough time in a day to do all the things we intend. Although it's true, depending on your perspective, the proper distribution of time can help you achieve your purposes. To do this, it's good to have a set routine that still allows time for spontaneity. It's all mostly about developing skills that will maximize your time and help you get more done.

I use to struggle with getting things done, in my case, it was more because I procrastinated and not due to a lack of organization. It often happens that despite the planning, execution is our major disturbance when getting where we want to be. We have to fight through the laziness and not give ourselves time to even think of postponing. It happens to most of us and working on your discipline by overcoming a lack of motivation is a way to go.

Overall, my goal in this article is to help you be more time-efficient, so here are 6 ways to properly distribute your time for better results.

  1. Plan ahead. Use whatever method you like: the calendar app on your phone, google calendar, planners.. etc., and add each task to your daily overview. The more specific, the better so you have a set time for doing each thing. Many time management apps can also help you achieve the goals you set for yourself.

  2. Prioritize. First of all, if it's something you can do in less than 5 minutes, then please do it. If not, then divide your tasks in matter of importance; the top ones are the most urgent, and the last are things you can leave for later.

  3. What matters to you?. Once we determine what it is that matters to us, we can detach from everything that does not. We often leave things aside, specifically because they're not a priority in our lives. A good way to determine this is to check if what you want is the result and not the process. Our focus is limited, so it's important we spend our time doing things that benefit us or others in a meaningful way.⠀

  4. Erase the "I don't have time." If something is a priority, then you make the time. We all have enough, and with a good work ethic, everything is achievable. Focus on one thing at a time and be realistic about the goals you set for yourself each day.

  5. Put in the effort. Nothing that lasts comes easy. Dedicate time for the things that have a big impact on reaching your goals and find the willpower to do things you might not want to do. Giving your best effort will make your future self proud and will avoid overwhelming.

  6. Appreciate time. Respect yours and other people's time, since it’s so valuable and can’t be gotten back. You control whatever it is you do with it. Therefore, if you ask for someone else's time, you should value it, the same as if it's your own. You hold the reins to your life, so don't forget that.
